Sofie Klapow- Blog Post 1

If someone where to ask you to name every single piece of communication technology you have ever owned could you do it? I probably couldn’t. In my lifetime technology has been advancing and changing so rapidly that I have trouble keeping track of every single technological device I have ever owned.  I got my first Cell phone when I was 10 years old. I of course lost it a month later and had to get a new one. I have been getting a new one every one to two ever since. There was always a new one that came out that seemed better and more exciting and I just had to have it.  I am at the point where I could no longer tell you how many different cell phones I have owned.  Technology for things such as cell phones, computer as and televisions is advancing at such a rapid rate that now it doesn’t take that long for a device you own to become obsolete. Obsolete technology is technology that is no longer used or outdated. Impulse buying things no longer cuts it. To ensure that I don’t get stuck with outdated technology or technology that will soon be outdated I do extensive research on the technologies currently available and the technologies that will be getting released in the following months. I would much rather wait and get the newest technology than buy something that will be obsolete in a few months. When buying my current phone I had to decide whether I wanted to buy the IPhone that was currently available or wait a couple of months to get a newer IPhone that apple would soon be released. This is not only something that I do but something that almost everyone does.
The lifespan of technology appears to be getting smaller and smaller and this isn’t just because of how fast technology becomes obsolete. I have to get new devices so often it is not the only reason. It seems that I break my devices much more often now. I spend so much more time on my devices now than I would have a few years ago. I used to be able to leave my house without my cell phone but now if I do that I feel like apart of me is missing.  Our communication devices are capable of so much that we use them for almost anything we need to do. The more time we spend on these devices the greater chance we have of breaking them. While we do spend more time on all technologies that we own, I have noticed that the devices that break the most are portable devices. These are things like tablets and laptops that literally get taken everywhere with us. When comparing the lifespan of a laptop and a desktop that I got around that same time I noticed that my desktop has been fully functional for much longer. Devices like Tablets and laptops are things that if you accidentally drop once will most likely crack or break in some way. As long technology continues at advance and update at the rate it is now the decrease in the lifespan of technology will continue to take place I, however, think that it is also important for use to find new ways to make the technology we have more durable and less vulnerable to breaking. If devices were more durable it would make the lifespan of some devices a little bit longer.
