I find it fascinating that there is
an entire world of communication occurring between two people that goes well
beyond the use of words. How is it that you can tell that your girlfriend is
mad at you, that your mom is proud of you, or that your friends don’t think
your jokes are very funny without a single word being said? It all happens
through a particular form of communication called non – verbal communication. This
non – verbal communication can be defined as any behavior in a particular
setting except for the words themselves.

When you communicate online you
miss a massive amount of information that you would otherwise have face to
face. I have never liked texting or emailing someone because I do not know how
they are reacting to what I am trying to say. It is very difficult to gauge
what you should say if you are entirely unaware of how the other person may be
receiving the information. I have always been more successful in communicating
with people face to face because I am better able to filter what I am saying
based on the reactions they give me.

If we were to make ourselves more
presently aware of small signs of non – verbal communication we would be better
able to succeed in any social situation. By better understanding the thoughts
and feelings of clients, friends, or significant others then we can better
adjust our own behavior to obtain a more positive reaction from them. I know personally that if I were not able to read
the hidden messages in my girlfriend’s non – verbal communication I would never
understand what she is thinking from her lack of use of actual words. There may
be chapter book of information being communicated from someone sitting right in
front of you. You just need to look for it.

When we discussed mood management as
a gratification for consuming media I was deeply fascinated because of how it
reflected myself my own use of media. Mood management is actively monitoring
and controlling your own emotional state. I find myself doing this all the time
through different avenues of media. I turn on the television when I’m feeling
lonely to make me feel like people are around. I listen to a sad song to bask
in particularly gloomy mood so I can move on from it. I watch funny You-Tube
videos when I want to laugh and feel light hearted. I never considered the fact
that I was actively controlling my own emotional state with the use of media. I
have always impulsively done this but never understood my natural tendency to
control my own mood.

I feel that a rather large portion,
if not all of my media use is to produce a certain desired mood. If I am not
trying to manipulate my mood then I am at least attempting maintain whatever
mood I may be experiencing. This concept brings media use down to the heart of
human nature and why we consume media at all. Whatever reasons people may go to
see a movie or play music at a party can probably be rooted in mood control. This
concept has brought a true realization to my own inner workings, and why I
watch, listed, read, or play the types of media that I do.
